In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between light and dark areas of a scene than normal digital imaging techniques or photographic prints.
This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.
The way it works is that multiple shots (a minimum of three) are taken of each scene. Each multiple shot taken is set to a different shutter speed. In effect the photograph is exposed for the lightest part of the scene through to the darkest in increments. Back at the studio the images are then processed, edited and then merged into one composite image and then enhanced for maximum print quality.
Not all subjects benefit from the HDR treatment and I will be honest with you if photographs you request to be shot using the HDR technique won’t work.
